Vitamin C, Peptides + Growth Factors - The Trifecta ▲ Growth Factors | Human vs. Plant Part 3.

The human skin consists of cells known as fibroblasts. These fibroblasts are what produces the growth factors that are a popular component of our skincare products. These Growth Factors are what helps to renew the skin naturally, aiding in proliferation, healing and cellular growth. All cells will create a Growth Factor but since we are speaking of our skin we will focus on fibroblasts specifically.

Fibroblasts have the ability to produce collagen and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is important for our skin to retain moisture in order for the skin cell to metabolize. Collagen builds the strength of the skin, giving it structure and reducing the appearance of aging and wrinkles. Within the nucleus of the fibroblast contains the DNA, which holds the skins specific functions and specific processes. You could think of DNA as our computer that houses our skins codes.
Our DNA needs to be activated by messengers from the outside of the cell. When the cell and DNA are penetrated it will create specific chemical reactions resulting in the activation of the specific DNA Gene.

Growth Factors are proteins and are one of the most powerful activators of DNA. Peptides are second on the list, which we discussed in the previous blog series Vitamin C, Peptides + Growth Factors - The Trifecta ▲ Put Some Pep In Your Skincare Game 💋 Part 2. So how is Growth Factors added to our skincare, you ask? Well, it is stem cells that make growth factors. So when stem cells are mixed into our skincare products by using a medium you have your growth factor product.

There are different types of stem cells used in skincare, which include human and plant. Typically with products that use plant stem cells, these will be very high in antioxidant power. For example, Image Skincare has a variety of plant and fruit stem cells in most of their products. With human stem cells, the growth factors will send signals to the DNA to work and help heal our aging skin. For example The HydraFacial Company's CTGF™ Solution is a Vortex-Booster™ treatment that minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has naturally derived human growth factors. Growth Factors again are natural proteins responsible for the skins healing process. Growth Factors help to minimize the appearance of fine lines, strengthen skin, and keep skin nourished. In general both human and plant forms are great to have in your skincare regimen. However for some clients who would find the human version less appealing, may need to ask for further clarification from their skin therapist as products or treatment descriptions will not be so detailed.

So to clarify this a bit more, stem cells maintain and repair the tissue and create new cells in the skin. A stem cell can be derived from humans or plants, however, plant stem cells are for antioxidant protection and the extension of cell life as they are very rich in antioxidant power. Human stem cells are what essentially produces the actual growth factors and so fibroblast-derived is the best growth factors for skincare if you are looking to activate your DNA genes and produce change on the cellular level.
